I MAY DESTROY YOU received eight nominations, including Best Actress for Michaela Coel
São Paulo, April 29th, 2021 – The BAFTA® Award nominees were announced this past Saturday, April 24th, during a virtual ceremony. Overall, HBO received 16 nominations, eight of which went to the original miniseries I MAY DESTROY YOU, including three of the event’s main awards: Best Miniseries, Best Actress for Michaela Coel’s performance, and Best Actor for Paapa Essiedu’s work.
Based on the personal experiences of creator and codirector, Michaela Coel, who also stars as the main character, I MAY DESTROY YOU explores the questions of sexual consent in modern life and where the distinction is drawn between sexual freedom and exploitation in today’s current world of dating and relationships. Frank and provocative, the miniseries, which was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Coel’s portrayal of Arabella, received nominations in the categories of Best Miniseries, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director: Fiction, Best Editing: Fiction, Best Make Up & Hair Design and Best Writer: Drama.
In addition to I MAY DESTROY YOU, HBO was recognized for the series HIS DARK MATERIALS, nominated in the categories of Best Production Design, Best Sound: Fiction and Best Special, Visual & Graphic Effects. Other productions nominated for awards were THE THIRD DAY, the suspense series starring Jude Law and Naomie Harris, nominated in the categories of Live Event, Original Song and Scripted Casting, along with the documentary WELCOME TO CHECHNYA and the drama series LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, which will both compete in the International category.
The 15th British Academy of Film and Television Awards will be held on June 6th and all of the productions, with the exception of WELCOME TO CHECHNYA, are available on HBO GO.
